Niraj Antani Has Published a New Bill to Legalise Online Gambling in Ohio

In 2021, Mr Antani co-sponsored a successful draft law that permitted sportsbooks in Ohio, which came into effect on January 1, 2023. Now, he has taken the next step by introducing Senate Bill 312, which aims to allow and regulate online casino gambling within the state.

The presentation of this draft law marks a significant milestone in Ohio’s ongoing efforts to boost its entertainment landscape. As the seventh-largest state by population, with nearly 12 million residents, Ohio’s entry into the world of online gambling could have far-reaching implications, potentially converting it into a key player in the US.

The suggested bill focuses on establishing a regulatory framework under the Ohio Casino Control Commission, which would oversee the launch and ongoing monitoring of amusement facilities. The proposed tax rate for tabletops and slots would be 15%, which is less than the 20% currently applied to sports betting.

Under the bill's terms, Ohio’s 11 existing casinos and racinos would each be granted the right to offer a single gaming application. This move is intended to leverage the state’s existing infrastructure and expertise in the gambling industry.

The economic advantages of this expansion are anticipated to be significant. Online venues could bring in considerable tax revenue for the state, which could be allocated to essential public services, infrastructure improvements, and community development projects. Moreover, the growth of the iGaming industry is expected to create new jobs, both directly and indirectly, providing a much-needed boost to the state’s employment landscape.

Ohio’s governor, Mike DeWine, can also throw a monkey wrench into plans and sabotage the project. He showed disrespect for gambling and expressed his regret over passing the state’s online bookmakers legislation in 2021.

Moreover, Mr Antani, despite issuing the bill, will also be unlikely to take it through the legislative procedure as his term limits will see him leave office at the end of this year.
